Volunteers needed at Francis House

Volunteers are vital to the smooth running of Francis House. We are in need of extra support for people to volunteer their time on the reception desk and in the kitchens at our Didsbury hospice.

Our volunteers are aged between 20 and 92 years and together currently provide more than 275 working hours a week.

Of the 73 people who volunteer at Francis House, 33 work regular shifts in the hospice kitchens, preparing and serving food for families at meal times and washing and clearing up.

Laura O’Shea, 22, from Withington, has volunteered for four years. She found working at Francis House was completely different to what she was expecting.

“I wasn’t sure whether it would be a sad atmosphere but all the staff are so lovely and friendly, and all the children are happy when they are here and always have a great time.

“You do sometimes see things that are hard to deal with, but you look at yourself and it makes you thankful for what you have and how you are,” said Laura.

Working full-time in the marketing office at Together – a finance company based at Cheadle Royal Business Park, has proved no barrier to Laura’s commitment.

Every Sunday afternoon she gives three hours of her time to working in the kitchen.

“Yes I can come in and I might be a little tired but then you look around and you think there are people here who would give anything to feel how I feel – it gives you a bit of a reality check. I really enjoy it.” Laura said.

We are really grateful for the commitment to Francis House shown by our volunteers but we still need more help.

If you are aged 18 years of age or over and can commit on a regular basis, please call 0161 443 2200 and ask for our Volunteer Co-ordinator or click here to apply

Volunteers are not involved in direct childcare activities.
