Bryan Robson a true sporting legend

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson didn’t let broken ribs stop him from honouring a commitment to attend a fundraising Sportsman’s dinner in aid of Francis House.

Once described as a ‘human marvel’ by Sir Alex Ferguson, Bryan delighted an audience of more than one hundred enthusiastic guests with a fascinating and enjoyable evening of Questions and Answers, ably hosted by Key 103’s Mike Toolan.

It had been hit and miss whether the event was able go ahead. Earlier that same week Bryan had to pull out of the Manager role for a Manchester Legends match against Barcelona due to the recurring sporting injury.

A Global Ambassador for Manchester United, he was also under strict doctor’s orders not to fly to China where he was due to represent the club.

Kate Puc from Francis House and organiser of the event, was one of many who breathed a sigh of relief when the former England captain walked through the doors at VAO restaurant in Sale, greeted by loud cheering and chants of ‘Robbo’ as he entered the venue.

As the questions from the floor came flooding in, he talked openly about his career, the current squad and up-and- coming players.

Widely regarded as one of the finest football players ever, Robson played 461 times for United scoring 99 goals. After happily posing for photographs and signings, he called it a day to rapturous applause.

A sumptuous buffet was then served followed by a raffle and auction. Bidding was electric and prized Manchester United memorabilia fetched £3,175. Among the items was a shirt signed by Bryan, which went for £350.

A tour of the Coronation Street set at Salford Quays, with actor Chris Gascoigne who plays Peter Barlow in the soap fetched £245.

The evening closed with a set by comedian Stand Up Dave.

The event was hailed a great success and raised £6,324. Francis House would like to thank everyone who supported the evening, the staff at VAO and for Mike and Bryan who gave their time for free to support their local children and young adults hospice.
