Jim Nicholas may have retired as head gardener at the Bishop of Salford’s residence at Wardley Hall, Worsley, but his roots in the world of entertainment are so deep the show must go on. He has been delighting audiences for almost half a century, switching from a singer when he lost his voice to become a DJ and Elvis impersonator. For almost 20 years he has put out a collection box at venues, an inspired move which has raised more than £105,000 for Francis House.
Jim, now 66, appears in shows with comic Jimmy Cricket who is also a big supporter of the charity. The pair were introduced many years ago by Sister Aloysius, and have remained close friends and showbiz partners ever since. He has just been awarded a Papal medal, known as the Bene Merenti – the equivalent of an MBE – in recognition of his work for the Catholic Church and fundraising. Jimmy Cricket said:
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this magnificent award than Jim. He has worked tirelessly for Francis House over the years, raising a phenomenal amount of money for this cause. ”
Their next engagement is the Jimmy Cricket Laughter Show at Hough End Centre, Chorlton, on Saturday, November 23. For tickets please contact Janet Cassidy 07899 742055.
