Final year film student Ollie Drieu, has raised more than £1,060 for Francis House after setting himself the challenge of running a 10k in less than 40 minutes.

Ollie Drieu, 21, spent weeks documenting his intensive training in a series of videos on his YouTube channel. On a overcast Sunday morning he lined up with dozens of eager runners at a race in Heaton Park where he finished an impressive second place in a time of 39 minutes and 37 seconds.

Turning to his YouTube audience of more than 2,300 subscribers for support, Ollie motivated himself further by fundraising for his local children’s hospice.

Ollie said: “Overall, the experience was the most positive I’ve had for any fitness challenge I’ve ever undertaken. It was a lot better organised than my previous sub-20 5k journey, so rather than taking 332 days to complete, it took me 75 days.

“I ran 332 km in training over those days. There were some highs, and quite a few lows – which is inevitable when training in the winter and running on rainy dark nights. I came up with the idea in mid-November, just after completing the sub-20 5K goal and my subscribers voted on my next challenge. I was certainly not expecting to get it on the first attempt, but I’m not complaining.

Challenge complete

“Crossing the finish line in 39:37 was initially a big surprise. According to my watch, I was not going to break 40 minutes. When I was sprinting towards the finish line, I saw the official timer and once I actually realised I’d done it, I was over the moon!”

“It's fantastic breaking my 10K PB and achieving the goal, but having raised over £1,000 is the most rewarding."

Ollie continued: “I’d encourage anyone who embarks on these sorts of challenges to fundraise, because the motivation and purpose it brings you is just unparalleled. Doing something for others, particularly others in need of help, as well as for yourself can’t be beaten.”

Ollie is now taking a break from serious training to concentrate on his studies. He will continue to run and make videos and has already signed up for the Great Manchester Run.

Running for a cause

Patrick Storey, fundraising officer of Francis House said of Ollie’s efforts: “We’ve loved following Ollie’s journey and watching him smash his sub‑40 10k challenge was seriously impressive!

“He’s championed Francis House brilliantly across his YouTube videos and social channels, and we’re so grateful for the funds he has raised and visibility he has brought to our cause. We are excited to have him on board for the Great Manchester Run and encourage anyone who is thinking about running for charity to get in touch.”
