Tribute to Jimmy Cricket

We were saddened to hear of the death of much-loved Irish comedian Jimmy Cricket, a great family entertainer and long-standing supporter of Francis House.

Jimmy worked tirelessly bringing laughter and delight to audiences across Greater Manchester, raising thousands of pounds through tours to raise funds in aid of the south Manchester children’s hospice.

Jimmy’s amazing career in comedy included his own TV and radio series, Royal Command performances, and in 2015 he was awarded a Papal Knighthood for his services to charity.

The same year, Jimmy marked his 70th birthday by kick-starting a charity fun run at Cown Reservoir. A decade later he hosted a sell-out Gala show for his 80th birthday at the Lowry Theatre, the proceeds of which were kindly donated to the hospice.

For ten years, Jimmy packed out the Oldham Coliseum with his friend and fellow performer Jim Nicholas for the ‘Stars Come Out for Francis House’ a charity gala night of music, nostalgia, comedy and entertainment that helped Jim reach the incredible milestone of raising more than £250,000 for the hospice over three decades of fundraising.

Paying tribute to Jimmy and his years of support, Rachael Taylor CEO of Francis House said: “Jimmy was much more than a wonderful supporter of Francis House, he was a dear friend to so many of us. For decades he gave his time, talent and boundless generosity to help children and families facing the most difficult of circumstances, asking for nothing in return except the chance to make people smile.

“He had a unique gift for bringing joy wherever he went. His warmth, kindness and unmistakable humour lit up every event he supported, and he never underestimated the difference that laughter could make. The monies he helped to raise will have a lasting impact on the lives of the children and families we care for, creating a legacy that will continue for many years to come.

“Everyone at Francis House is deeply saddened by his passing. Our thoughts are with May, his family and his many friends. We will remember Jimmy with enormous affection, gratitude and a smile – exactly as he would have wanted.”

Eamonn O’Neal OBE, trustee of Francis House also paid tribute saying: “Jimmy wasn’t simply a great comedian; he was a great man. He had an extraordinary ability to make people laugh while quietly changing lives through his generosity and humility. His friendship meant a great deal to all of us at Francis House, and he leaves behind not only wonderful memories but an enduring legacy of kindness that will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with all the Mulgrew family.”
